The Gambia is a Marmite Country. You will Love it or hate it. I found it very enjoyable if I put aside the hassle I got from the local bumsters.Here is a few tips I picked up.
1); Never say to the bumsters that you will see them later or tomorrow. They will be waiting for you!
2); The hotels are very expensive for food and drink. The minibars in your rooms are best left alone as they cost the earth and they add 15% to your bill when you leave.Eat and drink outside the hotel,it's alot cheaper and nicer!!!
3); The people of the Gambia are very friendly. It is very safe to walk in all areas alone. You will get hassled.
4); Be aware that Tourists are seen as rich visitors. There are a few scams the local bumsters may try.
a); The offer of being a guide or a friend. There is no such thing as a free lunch. They will expect some payment. (Even if they say "I just want to promote our country you have no need to give me money");
b); Build a church or School scam. If you want to donate money to a local school or church do it directly.Bumsters will show you pictures of buildings which are half built explaining they are raising money to complete it.
c); Taxis. The price which is shown on the official taxi boards is high. Haggle a better price before you start your journey.
5); The trips organized by your holiday rep are as always expensive.99% of the trips can be done using a taxi. We saved about ?180 doing the trips ourselves.
6);Buy your bozze and cigs when you get to the Gambia. It's cheaper than the duty free at the Airport. 200 cigs ?8
Hope this helps.
