Paleokastritsa is a beautiful resort with lots of small coves and lots of hills!!! If you like Cornwall then this is the place for you, but be prepared for some walking as the resort is strung out and hilly. The views from our apartments (Rosa Apartments); were quite spectacular, looking out over 2 of the coves and out into the Adriatic.
If you are looking for a party holiday then this is NOT the place to come to. There are plenty of bars, cocktail bars and tavernas but Faliraki this ain?t!!!!
Rosa Apartments
Booked through ?Hays travel? with Olympic Holidays (olympicholidays.co.uk);
A good 5 minutes walk from the main road, up quite a steep hill, but the views are really worth it. The apartments share a nice pool (Corina); alongside the Fotini Apartments just 2 minutes walk away. The pool has a small bar, which has a wide menu of snack type meals and also does English breakfast. Rosa apartments are basic, like lots of Greek studio apartments, but nice basic; kitchen area, shower, twin beds, ideal for couples.
We travelled to Lidl in Corfu Town for some of our food supplies as the local supermarkets can be a bit expensive if your budget is really tight, especially for breakfast cereals and food and vegetables. If you travel around there are good ?Co-ops? in Sidari and Kassiopi where the prices are also reasonable.
Eating out
There are lots of tavernas in Paleo and we found Spiros Taverna opposite the Mermaid Cocktail bar is one of the best places to eat, they have an extensive menu, regular BBQ?s and special meal deals, which also help if you are on a tight budget! The staff are all from the same family and are really friendly. It is about a 15 minute walk from the Rosa apartments but it is well worth the effort.
Lots of the tavernas have Greek dancing with one of the best being ?Paradise? owned by Nikos. Situated in the centre of Paleo it is at the bottom of the hill from the Rosa Apartments
Nereids Taverna looked good as well but is a bit more expensive.
Getting out and about
Getting around about and out of Paleo is something that we did by hiring a car for three days and also a motor scooter for another 3 days. We used Island Cars for the car, their local office is situated at the bottom of the hill from the Rosa Apartments. Easy to get to and handy for picking a car up and dropping one off. Prices range from 88 Euro (2004); for 3 days for a small Daewoo Matiz or Fiat Seicento.
Any car much bigger than this can be difficult to manoeuvre through some of the narrow village streets if you go off the beaten track.
The scooter we hired from Spiros Bikes for 40 Euro for 3 days.
Apollon Taverna
This can be seen at night at the top of the hill with its sign that is lit up and changes from APOLLON to TAVERNA. It?s worth the trip up for the view in the daytime, but not worth it for the food, both expensive compared to the Tavernas in the town and the service was poor quality, it was like the waiter didn?t really want to serve us.
Lakones
A small village at the top of the hill behind the apartments. Worth visiting and exploring, park up and walk around.
Castle at top of hill
This 13th century castle is well worth a visit and don't be put off by the walk up to it, it really isn't that far. Drive through Lakones and keep going until you see the sign for Kastro
Aqualand
Not worth visiting for the day unless you are a total water park freak. They do a lesser price deal from 3pm until 7pm for 13 Euro. This is plenty of time to do all the attractions. Food is REALLY expensive so take some packed stuff to keep you going. Lockers are provided at a cost of 3 Euro.
