I have stayed in the city of Rethymnon twice and am seriously considering booking again for this year.

The old town has beautiful venetian architecture and an almost cosmopolitan feel.

There are eateries aplenty from Gyros places up to proper restaurants, with many tavernas inbetween.

The usual gift shops exist selling leather, jewellery and carved objects. The best things to buy to take home are olive oil and honey.

There are many historical sites on the Island of Crete, and car hire is preferrable to local buses. I've never had a problem driving there.

The beaches are clean and uncrowded. There are quite a few nudist beaches in the South (around Plakias for example);.

The Cretan people are never anything but friendly and welcoming. And I could happily walk around this city at night on my own and not feel in any way threatened.

There are no british "lager louts" and the local teenagers/young adults are courteous - even if they've been drinking. Crete has an extremely low crime rate.

I'm sure many people think Crete is a little jaded as a holiday destination but for me it offers a little of everything I fancy.

I have rated this holiday 4 - not because of the destination but because the accommodation is a little tired & basic.
