Holiday reviews for Golden Beach

The transfer to Golden beach took over 3 hours. you have to get a coach from Kavala airport on the mainland to the port then a ferry across to Thassos and finally another coach to the resort. The Filipidis studios are 4 minutes from the wonderful sandy beach and even closer to a mini market and a couple of tavernas.. The studios themselves are much better than average for Greece. there are modern well lit with roller blinds and a decent bathroom without the usual Greek plumbing problems. They were clean daily except on Fridays and linen was changed twice a week. There was a kettle, fridge, small cooker and other basic equipment. However there was not a toaster. The only problem with studios was lack of air conditioning and having to pay 40 Euros for a hire of an inadequate fan for 2 weeks. Golden Beach is really best for couples wanting an idyllic lazy holiday. the only problem we encounter was wasps which inhabit this resort in summer and we got stung 4 times. If you eat after dark they are not a problem but eating at dusk they were at there most active.

The Filipiis Studios are great for a beach life holiday. There are located in a ideal position on a flat part of this wonderful resort, The studios are basic but comfortable and clean and all round are very nice. the main problem here is that air conditioning is not available and therefore the rooms sometimes can get uncomfortably hot.

The resort principle asset as the name suggests is its fabulous sandy golden beach lapped by turquois sea. There is a very limited amount of water sports available here.

The evenings are low key revolving around the tavernas. By Greek standard the food is average and the choice of dishes is similar in most of them. The house wine is suprisingly drinkable. Fedras has the best choice of food but the service here leaves a lot to be desired., being slow and surly.The only bar that stays open after midnight was Daves bar which was small but friendly.

We stayed at the Marina apartments which were clean and adequate. Its best attribute is its position being in the flat part of the resort and only a 2 minute stroll to the beach. However it does not have a pool or any other on site facilities and the air conditioning adds a considrably cost to ones holiday.There is a supermarket 400 yards away which is very useful.

It is also near the border of the next resort of Skala Potamis which is more commercial and a bit tacky in parts. We certainly would not want to be based here as the beach is nowhere as good as Golden Beach. Neverthless its certainly worth a visit especially in the evening it takes about 25 minutes to walk. There are some very good tavernas here with more variety on the menus.

Golden Beach is a must for beach lovers who want a quiet and restful holiday.The horseshoe bay is surrounded by mountains is very picturesque. the locals are friendly and welcoming. We also hired a car for 3 days which gave us the opportunity to see the rest of the island, as there is only a very limited bus servive and 2 weeks at this resort without moving could create a feeling of isolation.

Golden Beach nestled in a wonderful sandy bay surrounded by mountains. The beach is long with golden sand that shelves gently into the sea.

There is a good selection of tavernas mainly serving traditional Greek food and two small Pizza restaurant. If you want other fast food forget it.

There are one or two bars which are quiet with music played at a low level.

If you require anything a little more lively you can walk to the resort of Skala Potamis in about 30 minutes or get a taxi. Here there is a wider choice of taverna and some more bars including a cocktail bar. It is no good if you want more modern music as the emphasis is on middle of road music.

There is a bus service about 4 times a day that will take you to Thassos Town or to other resorts on the island. It is worth hiring a car for a few days to see the island, visits some remote beaches and drive up to a couple of the mountain resorts.

Also the beautiful mountain village of Pagnia is not far away and the best time to see this is early evening. What we did was to get the 17.30 bus up walk round the village and then have a meal in one of the tavernas. We then got a taxi back that took about 7 minutes and cost 6 Euros.

We stayed at The Emerald apartments which had fantastic views of the bay and mountains. The apartments were clean and reasonably well equipped. There is also a swimming pool and a small pool bar that stay open until about midnight. The owner Costas was very friendly and helpful.

However as the brochure states the apartments are at the top of a hill. what it does not state is the severity and length of the hill. During the heat of the day its a torture to climb and was the only only major negative of our holiday. If only there would arrange a mini bus service up the hill 4 times a dayit would alleviate the problem. Without this service we would go elsewhere in this resort next time we visit, as we certainly will return.

Overall our holiday at Golden Beach ranks among one of the best we have every taken in the past 13 years.

We would unhesitatingly recommend this resort to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy the fantastic beach and scenery. Its probably fair to say this resort is not ideally suited to teen and twenties age group, but is perfect for couples who want to take it easy.
