The Melia Cohiba is situated on the outer fringes of old Havana. You could walk, but in the heat and humidity we chose to take cabs. Ask the Concierge at the hotel nicely, and he'll organise an old American cab for you (or call 'GranCar' yourself); which could very well be something like a 57' Chevvy - unmissable!

The hotel itself is superb, and must rank amongst our top 10. It's only down point to be honest are the various 'surly' staff. In no way are they rude, just pretty miserable looking and in need of smiling lessons.

There are various restuarants within the hotel, bars, boutiques and of course a cigar shop as well as a Bureau De Change. Whilst we visited all, we found that as expected poor value for money was the order of the day compared to what you could expect should you look around a bit - theres a very interesting shopping centre across the road if you are feeling brave!

Our room was a junior suite, to which we were automatically upgraded when booking our twin centre holiday with Thomas Cook. Whilst the room was immaculate (and very large); we found that the shower appeared to have prostrate problems due to it's weak flow, and the so called jacuzzi was a complete waste of time. Furthermore, the air conditioning in the room was worse than useless, and everything was regularly interupted with frequent power cuts (including the safe, which we were trying to get into on a tight deadline the day we checked out!);.

Use of Mini - Bar and room telephones has to be cleared by Reception first, with a deposit payable in advance.

Just to top it off then, on our final evening in Havana what appeared to be a pair of local 'women of the night' attempted some sort of contact with me which was ignored. This happened within the hotel lobby late in the evening. Whilst i find that this can be ignored, some may find it uncomforting....

DO visit the Club Havana restaurant next door, the value for money and quality of service and food is absolutely superb.

The 'Tropicana' is purely for tourists, and whilst we did go just to say we had we found that the food was absolutely abyssmal (and we cannot emphasize that any stonger); and the service very poor.
