Holiday reviews for San Francisco

Went in March 2004 for a 4 night trip to propose to my girlfriend.

San Francisco is an awesome city. Although 4 nights didn't give us time to truly give the city justice, we saw a lot in the time we were there.

Some highlights included:

1); Hiring bikes from Fisherman's Wharf to cycle over the Golden Gate bridge and into Sausalito, catching the Ferry back to San Francisco (total cost $50 (can't remember, so this is very approximate););. This was about a 3 hour trip in all and 1 bike had a puncture that we repaired en-route. 2); Taking a bus out to the beach to the west of Golden Gate park and walking through the park (some walking, some bus trips - be aware that the bus running inside the park doesn't run in winter/early spring);

3); Riding the Trams - a great experience. There were big queues at the weekend though and it was sometimes hard to get on mid-route.

When we arrived at the airport we purchased a 7 day Muni-pass ($20?); which gives unlimited access to the trams and buses. Using this to get about was absolutely great, saved us money and hassle trying to find the right change for the trams.

The Hilton Towers was nothing special and I would have been just as happy in alternative accommodation. However, in San Francisco you do have to be slightly aware of your environment - the run-down Tenderloin district was 1 block away from our hotel. Despite this, we never felt threatened during our stay at all.

San Francisco is a city we would both like to visit again and to also explore the surrounding Oakland and Napa Valley areas.
