We had arranged to stop over in Sydney en-route from the West coast, to further up the East coast. Having booked a 'Bridge Climb' we fancied the cosmopolitan feel of Bondi, as opposed to some of the flash hotels around the Rocks/Darling Harbour etc, but did not want to mix it too much with the backpacker types etc (we were well into our 30's!); round Kings Cross district.
So, we found ourselves booked into the Hotel Bondi. Well, we found that the rooms were adequate, the view of Bondi Beach fantastic and the laundry service rubbish. We had a large amount of washing to be done from our first weeks assertions on the west coast, driving from Perth to Monkey Mia and back in a 4WD camper. Sadly, the laundry let us down. Well, never mind about that, because there are about 55976 surf shops around Bondi and it meant i could chuck most of the clothes i'd taken with me and stock up on cheap Quicksilver/Oakley/Colarado etc.
The hotel itself is right along the beachfront, literally 100 yards from the water. The downside of this is that the moment you leave the main entrance, you are usually accosted by 'PR's' just like you see in Tenerife/GC etc. Usually, they are English girls backpacking, but personally we didnt go to the other side of the planet to be invited by a slapper with burnt skin and delusions of grandeaur to Nobby's, the best nightclub in Bondi.
Dont get us wrong, Bondi is a fun place to visit, but for those of us getting on a bit (over 25); it's probably not the type of place you think it is! More Blackpool with sun and no donkies than true 'Oz' beach culture. Try Coogee or Manley, but only after walking down the prom at Bondi with a 'Kiss me Quick' hat!
:O);
